**THIS CHARACTER IS GOING THROUGH A MASSIVE OVERHAUL IN ORIGIN, EXPECT BIG CHANGES. Please excuse fragmented sentences, sections are gradually being edited so its kind of a mess. Maybe come back later **

[This article contains spoilers for the novella style fanfiction I plan on writing about her on ao3]

Masumi Hanako (花心 升美, Hanako Masumi) is a kunoichi of the Hanako Clan. For most of her life, Masumi was manipulated by Obito Uchiha, who plotted the potential use of Masumi's kekkei genkai in the overall health of the God Tree for the Eye of the Moon Plan.

Masumi originally worked as a member of the Akatsuki Intelligence Division alongside her mother. However, Airi's later incapacitation would have Masumi partnered alongside Itachi Uchiha, exclusively for specialized assassination missions, until the organization moved onto capturing the tailed beasts. While Masumi was not on missions, she worked in her family's apothecary to help create medications and poisons for the Akatsuki's mission work and the generate more revenue for the organization. During her time on missions with Itachi, their professional relationship slowly became intimate, and they privately began a romantic affair.

When Masumi discovers Itachi's developing illness, she tirelessly begins research to find a cure. Prescribing and crafting various types of supplements and specialized medications. Initially keeping Itachi in good health, their effectiveness begin to worsen as time goes on. Masumi and Itachi plot her pregnancy; this would allow Masumi to withdraw from active duty for an organization she didn't want to be a part of (Akatsuki), continue the Uchiha bloodline to take the pressure off of Sasuke to have children, and to give at least somewhat fulfill the wish Masumi had to start a family with him.

Naruto Canon Friendly Verse[]

Ultimately, Masumi is unable to cure Itachi illness, and he dies during his final battle with Sasuke. Masumi meets up with Obito to retrieve Itachi's body after striking a deal with him to allow her to bury Itachi's body in the Hanako Burial Meadow near Amegakure after Obito extracts Itachi's eyes for Sasuke. Masumi then lies to Konan and Pain that her children died due to birth complications, when in actuality they were in the care of her mother, who then goes into hiding. This lie allows Masumi "to mourn" and continue her suspension from active duty, keeping her from participating in Pain's Assault on Konohagakure.

Behind the scenes, while Masumi has become more of a hostage of the Akatsuki rather than a member, she helps create medications for Sasuke as he heals from the eye transplant, and later his fight with Killer B. After Itachi releases the Impure World Reincarnation and tells Sasuke the whole truth of the Uchiha clan, he informs Sasuke of Masumi's existence and their children. Sasuke seeks Masumi out after the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War during the Blank Period, and they reminiscent and connect over Itachi. After Sasuke leaves, he ensures Masumi's well-being by having Konoha ANBU patrol near their home from the shadows. Masumi and her children's existence is strictly confidential information, only known by the original Team 7 and the 7th Hokage's Advisor in order to not raise questions about the type of man Itachi truly was for Konoha's peace.

Masumi Canon Verse [spoilers][]

Ultimately, the medications Masumi crafted causes Itachi to enter a comatose state after sealing Amaterasu into Sasuke to activate in response to seeing Obito's sharingan. However this is unbeknownst to Sasuke, believing he truly killed Itachi before he himself loses consciousness. Leaving her children with her mother, who goes into hiding, Masumi meets up with Obito to retrieve Itachi's body after striking a deal with him to allow her to bury Itachi's body in a Hanako Burial Meadow after he extracts his eyes for Sasuke. However, Masumi realizes that Itachi had survived but knew Obito would take the chance to finish him off. Having nothing to lose, Masumi deftly slips Itachi poison that would give him the symptoms of death for a short period of time. This way, Masumi is able to trick Obito into thinking Itachi is truly dead, and she is able to save his life once more. She then leaves him in her mother's care, and lies to Konan and Pain that her children died due to birth complications. They allow Masumi to mourn and continue her suspension from active duty, keeping her from participating in Pain's Assault on Konohagakure.

Behind the scenes, while Masumi has become more of a hostage of the Akatsuki rather than a member, she helps create medications for Sasuke as he heals from the eye transplant, and later his fight with Killer B. After Kabuto's clone of Itachi releases the Impure World Reincarnation and tells Sasuke the whole truth of the Uchiha clan, he informs Sasuke that this isn't his true self, and of the existence of Masumi and their children; although he does not know where they are. Background[]

Masumi's Parents Join The Akatsuki[]

Masumi is the only child of Airi Hanako and Kenage Hanako. Throughout her infancy and toddler years, Masumi's family traveled along with the Hanako clan's caravan. Their lifestyle would change after the caravan had to make a detour from their usual route upon hearing the news at one of the checkpoints that the caravan ahead was nearly wiped out by an ambush lead by a masked man. Unbeknownst to them, this masked man planned this to cause the caravan to take a detour. Pressing onward, the caravan were forced to travel through a recently abandoned battlefield near Amegakure. Although this detour had its own risks, they deemed it safer than the alternative of their usual route. While traversing the area, they caught the attention of the Ame Orphans and nearly had a confrontation, not trusting these unknown shinobi who were approaching their caravan. However the encounter quickly turned peaceful, after Yahiko told Nagato and Konan to take the risk and allow themselves to be ensnared by Airi's flower release ninjutsu so they could prove their peaceful intentions and explain themselves. Initially the caravan were skeptical and dismissive, believing they could handle themselves, but the trio insisted. Airi and Kenage were inspired by the Akatsuki's ultimate goal of peace, and felt a kinship with the struggles Amegakure endures, as the Hanako caravan often gets caught in the crossfire of other nations conflicts. Masumi's parents decide to join the Akatsuki and set up an apothecary within Amegakure. This of course all being according to Obito's plan, to secure a Hanako child with the Flower Release kekkei genkai to manipulate to serve the Akatsuki and to be a fail-save for the overall health of the God Tree (a tree meant to bloom into a massive brilliant lily) for the Eye of the Moon Plan.

Masumi's Family Settles into Amegakure[]

Masumi’s family owned an apartment within Amegakure and an even smaller condo connected to a large greenhouse a short distance away from the massive lake surrounding the city. Both were necessary to support her parents’ work as Akatsuki members and their apothecary within the city.

The Ame apartment was primarily for convenience sake. Amegakure's population primarily consists of refugees, and has a heavy isolationist policy. Everyone is required to go through multiple security checks whenever they enter the city, and are under constant surveillance during their stay. Living in their Ame apartment during the week was practical for Masumi’s attendance at Amegakure’s Ninja Academy, facilitated travel to the Hanako apothecary, and integrated Masumi’s parents into the community the Akatsuki created within the city.

On the weekends, Masumi would travel with her parents to their condo. The location of the condo outside the city was necessary for the growth of the apothecary plants in the attached greenhouse. If the condo was within the city or too close to the surrounding lake, the constant rainfall would not allow the plants to receive enough sunlight to properly photosynthesize.

However, living outside of the city meant they could not be protected by the Ame ninja. There was a constant risk of hostile shinobi or criminals traveling past their home. To protect themselves, Masumi's family had elaborate traps set around the surrounding woods. For the entirety of Masumi's early childhood, until she memorized the location of the various traps and how they functioned, she was never allowed outside their condo without one of her parents to ensure her safety. Due to her parents being fairly busy due to their work as Akatsuki members and pharmacists, Masumi quickly taught herself the skills so she could run more freely outside.

While there, Masumi spent most of her time training to hone her skill in Flower Release under the tutelage of her parents. When she wasn't training in the ninja arts, Masumi was helping to gather and tend to the various plants for their family business. She was also taught how to create various poisons, salves, pills, and potions.

Tragedy Spurs Masumi to Become Strong[]

Masumi was still a young child when Hanzō agreed to meet with the Akatsuki, lying about recognizing them as an organization that would shepherd the world into an era of peace. In actuality, Hanzō was working with Danzō and to set up an ambush with his men and Root to destroy the Akatsuki by means of Yahiko's death through Nagato in exchange for Konan's life. Danzō set this all in motion by having Hanzō believe the Akatsuki were a threat to his power. Masumi's parents along with Daibutsu, Kie and Kyūsuke saw through their bluff. Airi resolved to stay back with young Masumi in case they sought to take her hostage while Kenage went with the trio to warn their organization's leaders of the ambush. However, they were intercepted by Obito and Zetsu. This became a confrontation and lead to the deaths the Akatsuki members sending warning. Thus, the ambush was mostly a success; Yahiko died, Nagato was crippled, and Konan barely escaped. The events of this onslaught lead to the organization's leadership being transferred to Nagato (beginning the era of Nagato's Akatsuki).

Knowing Masumi would be emotionally vulnerable after the death of her father and at seeing her mother breakdown in grief, Obito began his plan on manipulating Masumi to become a future member of the Akatsuki. Through the use of genjutsu, Obito implanted in Masumi the idea that she was partially responsible for her father's death. Obito made Masumi believe that if her mother could have been there - instead of staying back to protect Masumi - her father would have survived. Therefore, Masumi was determined to become a strong shinobi that would never need to be protected.

[WIP Header][]

Nagato and Konan entered a partnership with Obito to stage a coup d'état, Airi withdraws Masumi from the academy to protect her.

Fix wording!!!

Masumi began developing her own anxieties outside the classroom when she was doing well, recognizing her mother's skills being far past her own - when her mother was the one she wanted to protect.

Driving Masumi to become restless and she developed her own anxieties about . Thus, by the time she was 8 years old, Masumi asked her mother to teach her all she learned about espionage from traveling in the Hanako Caravan. This skillset even further set her apart from her classmates, putting her in higher classes than those her age. All of these factors allowed her to take and pass the graduation exam 2 years early.

However, even this did not satisfy Masumi. She still felt as if she could be doing more - not just as a ninja but as a member of her household.

Masumi even helped in selling their pharmaceuticals to the ninja of Amegakure - their apothecary bringing in some extra income.

((Work in Progress))

Personality[]

((Work in Progress, this is a mess))

Masumi is somber and intense around most of the other Akatsuki members, but is compassionate and emotive around the few she trusts and holds dear.

Masumi is an introverted and withdrawn person, however she always remembers her manners and addresses others with proper honorifics. Masumi was taught how to read past a facade, seeing into an individual's true self and reading into their honest intentions - all while learning how to 'play the part' herself, but in a more convincing way. During a mission, Masumi always attempts to avoid any unnecessary death or suffering, hence her preference to the small entry wound of senbon and the use of non-lethal poison.

When Masumi began her career in the Akatsuki, she primarily isolated herself. She favored being perceived as cold and detached for her own safety. She is acutely aware of how dangerous her co-workers are, as well as how they ‘re not the same kind of people that were in Yahiko’s Akatsuki – these were S-ranked criminals. When she needs to interact with others in the organization, she is serious and forthright- but never impolite or arrogant. She always takes criticism seriously and often tries to alter herself to fit the ideal – or at least appear as such before her critic to avoid confrontation.

When Masumi initially begins to be genuine around someone, she struggles in making a connection - coming off as socially awkward and bashful. Under it all, Masumi is incredibly compassionate and empathetic. She always strives to comfort others and will go out of her way to do so. Even when they claim they do not want it. This is especially shown in her attitude toward Itachi. (See Relationship With Itachi).

Masumi is prone to fits of fluster, gets teary-eyed over honest emotion and latches onto people who are kind to her. When Masumi trusts someone and is her full honest self, she is a little mellow-dramatic, mischievous and excitable.

After discovering Itachi's illness that he had been trying to keep hidden from her, Masumi has a shift in her personality. She becomes more cautious and distrusting. She scrutinizes over the mannerisms of her friends constantly looking for signs of hidden injuries or symptoms of sickness in her paranoia. Giving them different health supplements and vitamins on them over minimal things insistently. When Masumi is around Itachi, she becomes overprotective. Constantly ready to strike anything that may cause him harm in his weakened state.

Appearance[]

Masumi in full Akatsuki mission attire, also wielding senbon and using her jutsu Vine Whip

Masumi in full Akatsuki mission attire

Masumi is a fairly tall, multiracial woman with an athletic build. Her onyx hair is voluminous and wavy. She often ties her hair up in a high ponytail, accessorized with a purple and white wooden kanzashi hair comb in the shape of an anemone flower. She has long, wavy center-parted bangs that frame her face and extend to her collar bone. She has hazel eyes with long eyelashes, with an accent on her bottom eyelashes.

When on missions, Masumi wears her utility belt woven into a clasped sash similarily styled to an Obi onto her midsection over her Akatsuki cloak. The belt is buckled together under her slashed Amegakure headband, which also has two weapons pouches hanging from long leather clasps connecting them underneath it and to the back of the belt so that they hang by her hips. These weapon pouches carry senbon and wire strings. Along the right side of her midsection, Masumi has small bottles of poison slid into leather pouches clipped onto her belt. Along the left side of her midsection, Masumi has emergency first aid disinfectant, antidote, and healing salve stored into small clasped pouches clipped onto her belt. The back of Masumi's Obi-like sash has two buckles that attach to a large detachable pouch that clasps shut and holds her Book of Flora.

Under the cloak, Masumi wears a v-neck, sleeveless shirt with sleeveless mesh armor underneath, bandages wrapped around her forearms with metal arm guards (similar to what anbu wear) over them, and metal guard work gloves that reach up her knuckles on her thumb, index finger, and middle finger; while her ring finger and pinky finger are completely covered. She also wears a hair tie on her right wrist under her work gloves, but wears a red one on top of her left glove. This red hair tie became a wardrobe habit of her's later in life, and is suggested to be one of Itachi's, because he only ever wears red hair ties in his hair. On rare occasion, she may wear a wrist-mounted senbon launcher on her left arm or have a collapsible bō staff fastened to a holster on her belt. Instead of the standard shinobi sandals, Masumi wears traditional ninja tabi boots. The rest of Masumi's attire match her associates in the Akatsuki - loose fitted dark blue pants, and white stirrups.

Outside of her Akatsuki uniform, Masumi's attire consists of

Abilities[]

((Work in Progress!!))

Although Obito only sought after her unique chakra, Masumi's skills as a shinobi blossomed into formidability and made her well qualified to be a member of the Akatsuki. Masumi's unique fighting style is influenced by the Hanako Caravan's cultural tendency to be inspired by their clients from around the world. Henceforth, Masumi's technique in strategy, trap-making, and the main three ninja skill sets may be considered unpredictable to common shinobi. Masumi's nindō is rooted in mercy - she wished for the world to attain peace without prolonged suffering and with as minimal death as possible. Therefore, her ninja training was focused on incapacitating hostiles and efficient execution. Masumi has deadly accuracy and intent when she strikes, targeting weak points of the body or stabbing pressure points. This lead to her completing many successful low mortality S-ranked assassination missions alongside Itachi Uchiha.

Bukijutsu.[]

Masumi's primary throwing weapon is senbon. She preferred this over shuriken because the nature of the weapon would always push her to be more accurate, deliberate, and were incredibly effective for stealth. When she focused her flower release chakra into the needles, she could plant a cast jutsu at range to catch enemy ninja off-guard. She can also incapacitate enemy ninja by striking acupuncture points or dipping them in paralytic poison. This avoidance of major injury or death complimented her nindō of mercy.

Aside from weapons meant to be used at long range, Masumi is also rather skilled at Bōjutsu. Although, instead of using it to simply strike enemy ninja, Masumi would often infuse flower release chakra into the (staff). She could use this to strike a nearby surface normally out of reach to cast flower release jutsu or have the plant life sprout onto the skin of enemy ninja. Although she could cause serious harm with this tactic, she mostly uses it to alarm her opponent, making a non-lethal and non-barbed plant sprout from their skin.

Relationship with Other Akatsuki Members[]

For the Akatsuki Lives AU Version: Archive of Our Own (AO3) Version ((Work in Progress))

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Itachi Uchiha[]

Early into the leadership of the Akatsuki by Nagato the organization needed to obtain more money to support the goals and livelihood, thus they provided mercenary services at a competitive price[1]. To help accelerate the process of achieving this, outside of the ten key members for the Sealing Technique: Phantom Dragons Nine Consuming Seals the Akatsuki had reserve members such as Masumi. Occasionally, pairing members of the Intelligence Division with members of the main division proved to be more productive and gave better results for certain mission work than the usual set duo for tailed-beast extraction. Thusly, when the Akatsuki were hired to carry out an assassination mission, especially the type that specify to keep the death count of non-target individuals low and their appearance in the community to a minimum, Nagato assigned Masumi and Itachi to carry it out as partners. Itachi's skill in genjutsu and Masumi's skill in injecting poison (both lethal and non-lethal) at range proved them to be an effective combination. Their personalities during missions also worked well together, they were both quiet, even-tempered, avoided conflict and were strategically flexible as well as intelligent.

Although they worked well together on missions and appeared to all others to be a highly compatible team, there were numerous conflicts behind the scenes - although many were of a personal and internal nature. Itachi did not appreciate being paired off with a newer member of the organization, who had no remarkable history as a shinobi or as a criminal. He believed “Tobi” did this to show his lack of trust in Itachi, undermining his secret mission to obtain information on the criminal organization.

However, as he began working alongside Masumi, ((WIP))

As such, Itachi saw this as an opportunity to obtain information and secrets about the Akatsuki to report back to Konohagakure.

((Work in progress!!))

With her skills of perception of a person's true nature, Masumi is able to see past Itachi's cold exterior and understands he is much like her - a kindhearted person who lost most of their childhood to outrageous expectations, and someone forced to hide their true selves to survive. When she initially acts this way toward Itachi, he distances himself further from her to preserve his reputation and keep the secret mission as a double agent for Konohagakure from being revealed.

((Work in progress!!))

Kisame Hoshigaki[]

((Work in Progress!!))

Deidara[]

Around Deidara, Masumi speaks more colloquially and is generally more relaxed. She recognizes that he is fairly more-patient tempered in comparison to his colleagues, only being set off by people who directly aim to annoy him. She humors his antics about art, listening to his spiels about the beauty of a fleeting moment and finding insight in some of his observations. However, if Deidara‘s talk of art devolves into rhetoric or turns into a rant with the sole purpose to stroke his ego, Masumi loses her patience. She will either; call him out for changing the subject from art to himself as a means to gain praise, remind him to focus on the official business at hand, or she plead for him to not talk so much/so loud because she has a headache (when in actuality, he is giving her one).

Masumi recognizes how Deidara was brought into the organization against his will and is one of the youngest members among them, so she is typically more compassionate toward him. Masumi develops an honest friendship with Deidara, allowing herself to be more outwardly emotive and somewhat mischievous in how she discusses their co-workers with him. Usually by means of venting in a gossip-like manner. Deidara especially finds it amusing when Masumi criticizes Itachi, and becomes suspicious about their relationship when she nearly stops talking about him entirely. Although Masumi is able to redirect it for the reasoning to be that she doesn’t see him nearly as often, now that the Akatsuki had focused their resources on capturing the tailed-beasts, and citing the fact that she has not been assigned a single mission with him since.

As Hebi were pursuing Itachi, Masumi received news of Deidara's death from Itachi via a scroll delivered by a messenger crow. In response, Masumi cries, resenting Deidara for letting his frustration cloud his judgement, and for throwing his life away over the grudge he had against Itachi.

Sasori[]

Despite him being a regular customer to the apothecary, Masumi's relationship with Sasori is fairly surface level. He primarily only buys materials from her, preferring his own poison mixtures to her's. In the Japanese dub, Masumi uses the honorific "danna" (master) whenever she mentions him, recognizing his skill in puppet ninjutsu. In the English dub, Masumi calls Sasori "artisan Sasori". Unlike Deidara, she doesn't hold any strange grudge or conflicting view of his art style. Masumi believes their art styles are so different that they are not comparable, and are both valid in their own right. If the pair ever try to pull Masumi into one of their arguments, she often reminds them of her views of such or simply shakes her head and refuses to engage further. Sasori believes this is because she believes he is right and feigns impartiality to avoid upsetting Deidara, although this is untrue.

Generally around Sasori, Masumi holds up her professional persona even if Deidara is present. She does not hold any sort of ill will against Sasori, but understands they will probably be nothing more than colleagues. Although she will not openly admit it, Masumi thinks Sasori's human puppets are grotesque. Despite the lack of depth in their relationship and her honest aversion to his art, Masumi quietly mourns Sasori after Sakura kills him.

Tobi[]

Masumi is incredibly wary of Tobi. She was a little suspicious at first when she first encountered his childish persona, but nearly deemed him harmless before Itachi stepped in and advises her to not associate with “Tobi”. Itachi does not elaborate too much on why, but informs her that he is actually an incredibly powerful shinobi who deceives people with this immature false self. He also warns her that he has the sharingan, so it would be in her best interest to not look him in the eye and be wary of genjutsu. When Masumi inquires to know his identity, Itachi refuses to speak more on the subject - but explains that her knowing more would potentially put her in danger. Masumi is initially offended, thinking that Itachi doesn’t think she can hold her own, but dismisses it when she reasons with herself of his good intentions.

To support the concept of her ignorance keeping her off Tobi’s radar, Masumi drops a little bit of her professional persona in favor of being more patient. Generally acting in the way she would’ve if she were ignorant, although she does not let her guard down for a second around him or divulge any information of herself.

((Work In Progress, will probably change everything here))

Hidan[]

((Work in Progress!!))

Kakuzu[]

Masumi often avoids Kakuzu. She is well aware of his infamous temper - that resulted in the deaths of his past 4 partners- and does not want to be caught in the crossfire of one of his outbursts. However, she does not view Kakuzu as some brutish hot-head. His ability to steal forbidden techniques, kill the Takigakure elders (among many others) all while making and maintaining a profit has Masumi respecting his abilities as an intelligent shinobi.

Therefore, Masumi is careful in her social interactions with Kakuzu when they are deemed necessary. She is respectful and straight forward as to not waste his time. She absolutely ignores any of Hidan’s comments that try to pull her into one of their arguments, which Kakuzu finds amusing. If it weren’t for this behavior, Kakuzu would’ve probably never even remembered Masumi’s name - since she isn’t a bounty target nor does she ever have frequent or prolonged interactions with him.

Kakuzu's death leaves Masumi highly unsettled. She is concerned that there are ninja out there with the capability to take down such a powerful shinobi - especially one who is incredibly difficult to kill due to the forbidden jutsu enacted upon his body. She also worries about the finances of the Akatsuki - knowing how tight they were before Kakuzu joined. Not because Masumi in particular is obsessed with money, but she comes from a rather poor family and understands the importance of money to survive.

Before Obito awakens Sasuke to speak to him about the truth of the Uchiha Clan Downfall, Masumi strikes a deal with Obito. As long as he agrees to the location of Itachi's final resting place to be in Amegakure's Hanako Burial Meadow where her father is buried, Masumi will not fight him to try and stop him from taking Itachi's eyes. Although Masumi and Obito were both aware she would lose in a battle against him, he agrees to avoid wasting time. Obito does not care where Itachi is buried, for he only needs some of Itachi's DNA for Impure World Reincarnation. This plan is unbeknownst to Masumi. Masumi stays with Obito while he extracts Itachi's eyes from his corpse, and then she takes his body to give him a proper, private funeral in accordance with her clan's traditions. Thus, Masumi is not around when Obito talks to Sasuke. Obito is unable to use knowledge of Masumi and her relationship with Itachi as extra leverage to manipulate Sasuke, as the Amaterasu implanted in Sasuke's eyes would activate if he spoke of her.

When Sasuke goes to the Howling Wolf Village to get a bottle of Kotarō - a medication Itachi use to use for eye irritation caused by the sharingan - he runs into Kina and Reishi Kodon. They recognize him before he even introduces himself. They know so much about Sasuke because Itachi use to warmly talk about his little brother while he waited for his prescription of Kotarō to be prepared. They also mentioned that, only more recently, he would arrive with a woman who had long, wavy black hair tied up with a flower hair comb. Sasuke was perplexed by the mention of this woman accompanying his older brother, having never heard of her even when the brothers tell him her name; Masumi. Sasuke's Amaterasu does not activate, because the condition of her name being said by Obito specifically was not met.

Sasuke presses them for more information about Masumi, but they report that they know little to nothing about her. They claimed that she was always so quiet about her life in comparison to Itachi. They did note, however, that she always seemed to be worrying about Itachi - asking the brothers questions about the prescription and its side-effects, apparently having a background in medicine. Collectively they came to the conclusion that the pair were a couple, although they never got confirmation to this. Sasuke asked if they had any idea where she may be, wanting to learn more about who Itachi really was during his time after the Uchiha downfall, but they sadly informed him they had no clue. Sasuke makes a mental note to search for her in the future, and inquired about her around the village in hopes of catching an inkling of her whereabouts.

Masumi aiding in Sakura's rescue

In the Genjutsu World, Masumi makes an appearance in throwing the second kunai to release Sakura from her binds and jumping down with Itachi. However, she is not focused on by Sakura because of Itachi Uchiha being a much more prominent and relevant person to her. She also makes an appearance behind Itachi and Sakura by Kakuzu as Menma and Naruto's clash of Rasengan causes a massive explosion. As Itachi picks up Sakura to take her to safety, Masumi rolls her eyes and huffs.

Video Games[]

Masumi Hanako is a playable character in the following video games:

Game name Japanese release English release
Naruto Shippūden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 4 February 2016 9 February 2016

General Attacks

Masumi's physical attacks are heavily inspired by the Hung Ga and Tae Kwon Do. She may begin a combo with deep stances with open palm strikes or punches, but the majority of her moves are snap kick combinations that flow into one another - usually through leaping or spinning. Her more "direct" strong attacks are especially reliant on styles from Hung Ga and thrust kicks from Tae Kwon Do. Instead of shuriken or kunai, Masumi throws multiple senbon for ranged attacks. Her jutsu attacks that the player can select from are Flower Release: Whip of Thorns or Flower Release: Poison Ivy's Kiss.

Awakened Mode

In Awakened Mode, Masumi has flowering plantlife sprouting and blooming all around her player model for the duration. Her jutsu attack deals double the damage, recovers in half the time, and her ranged senbon attacks deal poison damage to gradually sap the opponent's health for a short amount of time.

Ultimate Move

For Masumi's Ultimate Move, she uses multiple flower release jutsu. The initial hit to trigger the Ultimate Move, Masumi does a spinning wheel kick as flowers bloom around her.

First, the camera does a close up on Masumi as she uses flower release: War God's Breath to render the opponent confused by the shadows cast by the genjutsu and their lack of ability to see through the thick fog. The camera zooms out behind the player character at a low angle as they wildly turn their head about, watching the various apparitions of Masumi around them, approaching menacingly. The camera cuts the opponents face as the pollen then enters their lungs and they double over coughing. While they are suffering from their coughing fit, everything but their face is becoming trapped in a thick bush of roses and thorns (Flower Release: Bloody Roses). The camera cuts to the real Masumi then emerging from the pollen fog with a threatening stance. She walks up to the opponent, the camera does an extreme close up on the opponent's eye as Masumi forces it to stay open and drip a drop of the poison into it from a small glass vial.

"Stop struggling, it'll only prolong your suffering." [Only plays if the ultimate jutsu isn't the finishing move]

The camera goes to an over the shoulder shot as Masumi approaches it with a melancholic but determined expression while she walks away from the opponent; who becomes shrouded into a mere shadow in the pollen as we hear them scream in agony. They suffer minor poison damage for a short period of time afterward.

The genjutsu element of fog effect will not work on an opponent with the Sharingan or Byakugan, therefore Masumi performs flower release: Fog of War instead, and the enemy shinobi are still affected by the pollen entering their lungs. After they double over in a coughing fit, the rest of the Ultimate Move plays normally.

Masumi vs. Itachi

Finishing Move

  • (Smug) "Stop going easy on me Itachi, I know you can do better than that."
  • (Bewildered) "This isn't a genjutsu, right? I'm actually... winning?"

Ultimate Move

When Masumi walks up to Itachi, her eyes closed (to avoid genjutsu), with a different colored vial. Instead of it causing searing poison damage, it puts him to sleep. The damage the poison would've caused is inflicted by the roses as we see their shadows retracting into the ground among the pollen fog as Masumi walks away. Itachi is then stunned for a short period of time afterward.

Masumi vs. Sasuke

Finishing Move

  • "And I'm to believe you beat Itachi? ... he really was sick... wasn't he..."
  • "Sasuke, if you're going to restore honor to the Uchiha clan you're going to have be better than this!"

Trivia[]

  • Masumi Hanako's name translates to "Ascending Beauty Flower" (or "Blooming Beautiful Flower")
  • Masumi's birth flower is purple and white anemones - matching the appearance of her kanzashi comb.
  • Masumi's first Akatsuki cloak was her mother's - the organization at the time of her joining did not want to waste what little funds they had for her to get a custom made one.
  • Masumi is bisexual (closeted).
  • Masumi has existed since 2007, she is her creator's first original character they became really attached too. Although her story and abilities have been drastically rewritten. Her appearance has also drastically changed, only her eye color and hair color has remained consistent.
  • Masumi's stats are based off of the deviantart quiz suggested for character building on the Naruto OC wiki, and the stats of other Akatsuki members played into part of their consideration. Her creator wanted to make sure she was strong enough to stand by Itachi Uchiha in combat, but not too strong that she would be overpowered. In the end, Masumi's stats were heavily inspired by Kisame's stats (due to him being Itachi's partner during the majority of the series) when it came down to the total score.
  • Masumi is fluent in Hanakotoba .
  • Because of Itachi, Masumi also has a close connection to crows.
    • Masumi helps care for the many crows who are connected to Itachi. She tends to any injuries, gives them treats, and spends time bonding with them.
    • Some of the crows in Itachi's flock have been given names by Masumi. She usually names them something silly or cutesy (such as Crowbi, who she occasionally endearingly refers to as Cro-Cro).
    • However, Masumi does not use crow clone jutsu since her relationship with Itachi is meant to be a strictly private thing. Using his signature substitution jutsu would make it too easy to draw a connection.
  • According to the databook(s):
    • Masumi's hobbies are sketching, watercolor painting and dancing to music. Her artistic talents are displayed in a bound sketchbook she keeps with her. This sketchbook contains handwritten notes about apothecary among various botanical illustrations. After she first began developing a crush on Itachi, she began doodling little crows in the corners too.
    • Masumi's favorite foods are Unagi and Onigiri with Miso filling, while her least favorite food is any type of pickled food. She is also very fond of sweet drinks, such as peach tea. Furthermore, Masumi has a big appetite like her fellow clansmen.
    • Masumi's favorite word is "Understood" (わかった, Wakatta)

Quotes[]

  • (To ???, about the Akatsuki ) "But that's why organizations like the Akatsuki exist. Our goal is to protect mankind from themselves. From war. Even though some of us seem like . . . less desirable people. These are the reasons why my mother joined when it first formed. This is the reason why I was raised to join too. We want to help people."
