Akira Mizukino (光月野 アキラ, Mitsukino Akira) is a jōnin level kunoichi from (previously) Konohagakure and currently Sunagakure. She had to flee from her home in the Land of Storms at a young age.

Personality[]
Growing up in an aristocratic family, Akira has been taught discipline and respect from a young age, two qualities which are very important to her in her daily life. She tends to take business (such as missions) very seriously and values focusing on what needs to be done rather than what she wants to do. A slight hindrance in her values is Akira's strong moral compass, which constantly pushes her to help other people, save or spare lives. Even in a mission where hers or her teammates' lives are threatened, she cannot bring herself to kill, not even in an act of self-defence. She can also easily get sidetracked if there's a person in need.
Outside of missions, Akira favours spending time with her close friends or close acquaintances such as Shikamaru Nara, whom she engages in shogi games with every so often.

In her pre-teen to early teen years, Akira is rarely seen outside without her newly acquired Konoha flack jacket. Underneath the vest, she wears a purple T-Shirt that reaches right above her elbow, wide, light purple pants and short ninja sandals. Most of her clothing pieces are decorated by stripes in a darker or lighter colour than the rest of the fabric. Around her right leg, she tied a pocket for everyday ninja tools.
Akira's hair is about shoulder length during Part I, tied into a small ponytail on the back of her head.

Qi and Physical Prowess[]
From a young age, Akira was trained in Qi control to help her immune system and stabilise physical condition (just like most children in the Sister Nations). Just going into it, she was always rather good at focusing and looking into herself, which made her learn the channelling and control over her Qi flow early on and also enabled her to graduate from the academy in Konohagakure early due to her highly advanced usage of it. The amount of Qi she can use at a time rose substantially throughout her life but has never been low by any means, which is a result of being a direct descendant of Yogen Mizukino in the Land of Storms, the only place and clan in which the "Qi of Yin" is still prominently present.
Physically, Akira is not particularly strong but makes up for it in speed and sensing abilities, which enable her to beat a stronger opponent through dodging and exact timing of attacks.
Ninjutsu[]
Elemental Qi[]
Akira can use her Qi to adapt to elements like most Qi users do with the exception that her Qi type is capable of adapting to any natural element as well as the moonlight, which allows her to use all five types of nature transformation (notably water, wind, lightning, earth and fire as well as combinations between them), depending on what elements she has available. A common combination she learned to use (which is a technique commonly taught in her hometown) is the Storm Release: a mixture of wind, water and lightning.
Taijutsu[]
While not a highly-skilled fighter for most of the beginning of the story, Akira can utilise Taijutsu in battle well with the help of her clan's "Qi of Yin" that allows her to sense movement and her high speed. Taijutsu would be her go-to way of fighting if the distance between herself and her opponent gets too small.
The general fighting style she uses strongly resembles Tai Chi (that she mostly learned from her teacher, Kikyo) which requires strong, balanced Qi levels throughout the body and absolute focus and control, a skill which Akira perfects and can utilise almost subconsciously by the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Eyes of the Moon[]
Commonly being mistaken for a Doujutsu by opponents (hence the name), the Eyes of the Moon (月の目 "Tsuki No Me") are a direct result of the activation of the Qi of Yin during the night, sort of like a side effect. Once the Qi adapts to the moonlight, functioning like the adaption to any other element as well, the eyes of its user glow light purple, though it has little to no effect or relevance to the usage of the moonlight powers itself. With this Kekkei Genkai, Akira can physically feel gusts of wind, vibrations in the ground or hear the quietest noises as the Qi of Yin strongly boosts the user's senses to an almost hypersensitive state. In combination with her high speed, this has proven to be a very powerful ability.
Intelligence[]
While not overly into studies, Akira has proven to be able to absorb and remember noteworthy information for long periods and is a very efficient learner in regards to fighting techniques, styles, stamina, Qi control and strategising, making her a dangerous opponent on the battlefield. On top of that, her basic comprehension skill for challenging tasks, puzzles or battle tactics is so high, she can keep up with Shikamaru in a game of chogi for a good while, though she has won only a select few matches.
Botanical Knowledge[]
On top of strategic abilities, Akira has spent a lot of her childhood and teen years in forests, greenhouses or caring for plants. Doing this extensively helped her research many different types of plants, their properties and habitats. This lead to Akira developing a personal dictionary for Botanics in her memory, allowing her to recognise and categorise plants whenever she sees them. Thanks to this, she was able to help expand Sunagakure's greenhouse to allow for the village to grow a greater variety of herbs needed for medicine or antidotes. In her adulthood, she also contributed to the construction of the Sunagakure Dome, a greenhouse park close to the centre of the village.

- The kanji 光月 "Kotsuki" can also be read as "Mitsuki", which roughly translates to "moonlight". Meanwhile the kanji for Akira's name 晶 means "Crystal" so her full name "Mitsuki no Akira" or "Mizukino Akira" means "Crystal of Moonlight" or "Moonlight Crystal". 野 (no) also written の (no) in hiragana added after 光月 turns into 光月野 (Mitsukino) and can mean "of the moonlight".
